HYPERBARIC OXYGENATION?
The application of air under increased pressure with the aim of treating certain respiratory diseases dates back to 1662. The first use of oxygen for medical purposes was in 1794 by Boddoes, while the first article describing the application of hyperbaric oxygen (HBOT) was published by Fontaine in 1879. There is no drug that can increase the amount of oxygen in the blood. The only currently known method, based on increasing the amount of oxygen dissolved in the blood at elevated pressure, is hyperbaric oxygenation (HBOT). It is a scientifically based treatment method that is carried out by breathing pure medical (100%) oxygen in a hyperbaric chamber at a pressure greater than one bar, which is the value of normal pressure at sea level. By inhaling hyperbaric oxygen, we get up to 20 times more oxygen dissolved in the blood than by inhaling air (normal breathing) or three to four times more than by inhaling oxygen at normal pressure. By diffusing oxygen dissolved in the blood towards the tissues, local and/or general hypoxia (lack of oxygen in the tissues) is quickly corrected.
WHY DO WE NEED HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY?
A large number of diseases and conditions are based on a lack of oxygen - hypoxia - caused by various mechanisms. Whether it is the primary cause of the disease or its consequence, it is essential to remove the deficiency, so that tissue cells can survive and restore normal functions. As the lack of oxygen is dangerous for every cell, it is clear where the great interest and very wide applicability of hyperbaric oxygen as a medicine comes from.
WHICH ARE PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF HBOT?
-
increases the amount of oxygen in the cells at the expense of physically dissolved oxygen in the plasma, which corrects hypoxia and reduces the inflammatory reaction of tissues;
-
improves blood circulation, reducing plasma density, increasing the elasticity of the membrane of red blood cells, reducing the stickiness of white blood cell platelets, and accelerating the creation of a network of new blood capillaries (neoangiogenesis);
-
leads to the removal of gas bubbles from the body, which is of great importance for divers and gas embolism;
-
increases the body's defense abilities, because it increases the ability of white blood cells, stops the growth of bacteria and kills them, whereby this action is most pronounced in bacteria that cannot live in the presence of oxygen;
-
enhances the action of some antibiotics and other drugs;
-
has a strong effect on reducing swelling because it causes narrowing of blood vessels, which is of great importance for the treatment of many diseases and conditions;
-
raises the level of the body's defense against dangerous forms of oxygen (free oxygen radicals), which slows down cell aging processes;
-
increases the sensitivity of malignant tumor cells to radiation and reduces side effects of radiation;
-
recovers collagen production and enables the formation of new tissue, thus accelerating the regeneration of skin and subcutaneous tissue and wound healing;
-
accelerates recovery in case of bone injury (osteogenesis);
-
enables faster recovery of athletes after injuries; improves mental functions and shortens the conduction time of nerve impulses.
